Are there any scholarships available for international students who want to study medicine in the UK?
Question by neminem: Are there any scholarships available for international students who want to study medicine in the UK?
I’m currently a junior in high school, and I plan on applying to the UK for medicine, for 2011 entry. Are there any scholarships available? I did search some sites, but they say ‘non-clinical’ subjects. Does that mean that it is applicable for the first two years of the medical degree (the last three years being clinical) or not at all for medicine? Any scholarships at all of any amount would greatly help, as my families financial background is not very strong.

If your family’s financial background is not strong then you should NOT be going to the UK for your degree. The only people who should go over there for their bachelors are students from families who have enough money to pay for the full tuition and expenses out-of-pocket.
It is highly unlikely you will get a scholarship and here’s why. UK universities do not have large ‘endowments’ like most American private universities have. Students in the UK do not have to pay very much to go to uni, therefore the uni does not get much money from the majority of their students and that means there is little if any scholarship money to give out. Even if the university gives out scholarships, the money is going to be primarily for needy UK and EU students and a very small portion left over for academically exceptional international students. You may get a scholarship for a few thousand off a year (if you’re lucky) but its not going to make your schooling anywhere near as affordable as going to a public school in your state and just studying abroad in the UK for a semester. Also keep in mind that any scholarships that you get from third party organizations here in the US usually cannot be used at schools outside the US.
In conclusion, if you are betting on getting a scholarship to make your schooling in the UK affordable then it is time to wake up and taste reality. If your parents are not paying for the $ 15,000 tuition, $ 15,000 living expenses, and $ 10,000 in travel needed EACH year to study in the UK (not to mention on top of the crap exchange rate) then you CANNOT afford to go there!!!
